How can I register my car online in Punjab?

In India, vehicles are governed under the Motor Vehicle Act, and according to that, no car in the country can go on the road without carrying a unique motor vehicle registration number. Without a valid registration number, if a vehicle is running on the road, such vehicle owner/driver is liable for legal action as per the Motor Vehicle Act provisions. 

The various types of registration for vehicles are as follows:

• Temporary registration.
• Permanent registration. 
• Change of address.
• Re-registration/renewal of registration.
• Issuance of duplicate registration certificate.
• Endorsement/termination of hire purchase/hypothecation.

Each state RTO has laid down a specific process for registration and online registration.

• The documents required for registration of the vehicle in Punjab are:
• Sale invoice or certificate of sale, PUC certificate, Insurance, Roadworthiness of vehicle, custom clearance document (wherever applicable), and address and identification proof of the purchaser. 
• The above documents are required to register vehicles in Punjab; over and above the documents, the applicable registration charges and taxes are to be paid along with the application.

Assignment of vehicle registration number

The owner can either opt for a fancy registration by paying a premium amount or choose to receive the ongoing series of the last number assigned in the series. The vehicle registration number consists of an alphanumeric combination such as the first two letters code of the state. Two numbers between 01 to 99 indicating the RTO will be registered, followed by alphabet/s telling the series of registration, and last will be a four-digit vehicle number which shall be between 0001 to 9999.

Validity/ renewal of registration certificate.

The vehicle registration certificate is valid for 15 years. It needs to be renewed every five years by submitting the appropriate documents like PUC, old RC, insurance, and Vehicle health certificate.
